Cathartic

They say a leopard cannot change its spots. For a tiger, its stripes. Metaphoric expressions that simply state that we cannot change our basic nature.

I don't think so.

We go through many noticeable changes as we age. Some even claim that the human body regenerates itself over a period of seven years.

You can change the color of your hair, eyes, skin tone, even your cup size if you wanted to. It's that easy. But that's just the physical....

I've seen a lot of people change over time. I myself have. Some because of age. Others, money - the excess or the lack thereof. Same goes with knowledge or skill, ignorance or obliviousness. Or if you're lucky, wisdom.

Regardless, I believe that reality is essentially static. Belligerency between nations. Conflicts in governments. Upward spikes and crashes in stock markets. Rivalry in siblings. Everything changes.

As they say, just go with the flow.

To me, change is not a question of better or worse. It probably just is. Period.

Although I try to be optimistic, I know deep down I'm severely pessimistic. At my age and I wasn't, I'd be an idiot.

This is the first time I've visited your site, and I wanted to tell you how nice it is, and your posts are thought provoking.

Your current post about change is, in my opinion, right on. Change is a natural part of existence. We all change - some for the good, and others for the bad. Also, everything around us changes, so the best strategy for survival is to learn to deal with change, not to oppose it. You have nailed it, and I trust that you are a much happier person because of it.

One thing bothers me, however, and that is the question of why you are so pessimistic? Severely pessimistic, to use your words. And then to say you'd be an idiot if it weren't so. I disagree. You have a life ahead of you that is filled with exciting and wonderful opportunities for adventure. Change will be a big part of it. You must always be careful, however, because pessimism is the biggest killer of choice.

Love your words, and your site.

PS: I write short biographical stories about my jumbled life. Stop by sometime and have a laugh or two on me.

Happy trails

Many persons think changes are tragedy. With time I understand that tragedy is our mind that is never content with what it has.

There are persons (many!) that die when are very young. And they have not to live changes more.

So, what is better?

I believe that if we define change within the scientific context, change will not be static; as in water changes to ice when subjected to cold, and evaporates when exposed to heat. Somewhere between the processes, something is lost or something is gained.

On the other hand, if we talk of change in the context of human emotions, I think it could mean, transitional, fluctuating, ambivalent, fickle; suggesting turbulence, etc.

Sometimes, I also wonder, do we remain the same after a huge emotional upheaval?

Just my two cents worth :-)

Stay well.

Cheers!

Swubird, it's nice to hear from another MW member. Thank you for the kind words. I have to agree with you, the best survival strategy would be to deal with it, not oppose it :)

Liudmila, the change I was referring to has nothing to do with tragedy. Fate, destiny, change, and tragedy are altogether entirely different concepts :)

Lotus flower, after major emotional upheavals, I don't think so :)

Hi Ivy,

I agree that change occurs for its own sake, not always good nor bad.The old adage that "the more things change, the more these remain the same" holds true in a lot of circumstances. Changes in technology are the result of research, and changes in the physical environment occur because of the increasing patterns of use that it is subjected to by the change in population volumes. How people respond to these changes create new perspectives and practices on values, attitudes, and culture, not necessarily acceptable to everyone. And here, we would see change in people.

I always used to express in exasperation, half serious and half joking, as to "Why didn't I have wisdom when I was younger"? I believe it comes with our coping mechanism in discerning the insight of good and bad experience, where wisdom goes to those who are able to transcend the vicissitudes in one's lifetime, rather than to succumb to the difficulty of the moment and be demolished by its weight upon one's fortunes - where the selected option is resignation. Under this situation, wisdom may have difficulty coming to the surface.

I am prone to positive thinking, but I balance this with a questioning mind...to clarify, validate... and to test all angles before acceptance. Experience has brought this about. It is an expensive and painful teacher but its lessons are lifelong.

At a younger age, i was pampered, which led me to see that it has denied me of the experience I could have obtained at a lesser cost and pain. This is what pampering or spoonfeeding does. It removes our motivation to learn and simply devour the fruits of other peoples effort, experience and learning.

You wouldn't be where you are today if not for a considerable amount of effort and positivity. I feel that what you really mean in your last sentence is that you can or must be skeptical about a lot of things; or, better yet, that you should have a critically questioning attitude. Severely pessimistic is too harsh that it may connote someone who is ready for spiritual freedom. :-) --Durano, done!
