Shiver Me Timbers: Drastic Measures (Part Two)

No, I did not shave myself bald a la Britney. I merely had a haircut. It's just a bunch of dead cells, right? So what's the big f***ing deal? Why so overly dramatic? With much preamble, here's the explication.

I'm pretty much a self-proclaimed daredevil. I've always been adventurous, even reckless to a degree. I'm very much into extreme sports. I have 2 tattoos and 4 piercings. I even once squished horse manure with my bare hands on a dare. I'm that deranged.

I'm pretty much up for (almost) anything except when it comes to my locks. It's the length I'm quite anal about. I've always believed that a woman's hair can be her crowning glory or the bane of her existence. Over the years, I've been a brunette, redhead, even (near) blonde. I sometimes have it dyed jet black, and at one point, dark blue.

For nearly two decades though, I've managed to keep it at a certain length. The shortest being up to my armpits, and the longest, waist length. In the early 90's, when Demi Moore (in Ghost) made it uber cool to sport short hair, I wanted to be 'in' and get the same cut. I begged my mother to allow me to have my lock sheared. Her response being, 'If you seriously want your face to look like a huge siopao (steamed bun), by all means get that haircut'. I never asked again.

I couldn't possibly blame her as I was then extremely overweight. She would've been right. I considered keeping it long in homage of her as she has worn hers for nearly her entire life.

Since Rihanna came out with her 'Umbrella' music video many months back, Joel has been constantly bugging me to duplicate the cut. To please him, I went to the salon and just when the stylist was about to shear them, I changed my mind and got a coloring instead. To his dismay, I went home a (near) blonde. A few weeks later, I asked a sister to tag along for moral support. She ended up getting a makeover. Another few weeks pass, and with the intention of having it done (this time), I'm at it again. I went home with a Brazilian (if you have no idea what that is, then goood for you lol). Last week, Joel escorted me. Still, my hair remained untouched.

So why do it now when practically everyone, from Rihanna to Posh, Katie Holmes, even (our local) La Greta is sporting the same cut? I'm certain that by time you get to this part, you'd have no doubt that it wasn't a frivolous decision.

I was really upset the day I wrote Hyperspeed. I even considered putting an end to my blog. For some reason, the ghost of an ex-alter ego that I thought I've managed to exorcise over the past decade reappears on my site. Just when I thought I've mastered the art of forgiving and forgetting, I turned acerbic as 'it' managed to leave me a message.

I felt rage (just that honey, don't flatter yourself) as the memories resurface. Harry & Joan Mier once said, There are times when forgetting can be just as important as remembering - and even more difficult. So true.

In doing something I never thought I'd be willing to do, I was able to vanquish my negativity. Seeing a part of me cut off was like crushing those lousy sensations.

Only now can I truly say that I did hit the mark with my exorcising. And I feel so much lighter too.In hindsight, I know I did it for myself and nobody else.

Believe me, I am just as anal about my do. For the last 10 years, my hair's been below breast-length (for lack of a better term). So i pretty much liken chopping it off to chopping off one of my limbs..he he he!

But on a more serious note, yes, it's definitely uncool when an ex conveniently waltzes back into your life as if it was nothing...Meanwhile, if you're anything like myself, you painfully analyze the whole occurrence--What does this mean? What was he THINKING? Doesn't he realize I'm married? etc, etc. The whole situation may even stir up residual feelings you didn't even know you still had...Anyway, I've been there so all the more power to ya for lopping off the baggage! Change is supposed to be good, right?

I have, like you, had many different colors and styles. But, I have had my hair butt length and "short, but so it doesn't stick up".

The last time I chopped it off, it was half in spite of an ex and half because the weather had turned so darn hot! It was the first time I'd heard my hairdresser hum while she cut my hair.

I haven't regretted it since, and love the fact that my hair can grow out again if I want it to or I can chop it off - if I want to! My decision - just like you said. :)

And, anyway, your haircut is fabulous! Enjoy the liberation! ;)

The haircut certainly emphasizes your beauty Ivy. It looks great on you. I'm sure it took alot of courage to go for it but hey, like you said, you are the daredevil. :-)
I thought these two posts were really good, the way you set up the intrigue on the last one to hook the reader into wanting to know what happened.
Well, it certainly peeked my interest. Peace.

The haircut looks great.

I've always been really scared of cutting my hair.

I had it cut short once when I was 14 because I got chewing gum stuck in it. I cried so much I've never been able to cut it past my shoulders.

Ha! They will do that to you. They're evil. That's why they're Exs! :d

After a really wicked break up long ago I cut off every strand of hair... I liked it so much I wear it that way a good 70% of the time.

LOL! I've always felt the same way about my long hair. Probably the only real "filipino" thing I've inherited from my parents.

Earlier this year, I got it cut to almost shoulder length from it being past my butt, and I'm still regretting it.

But, I think I like yours.... Never got blessed with the straight hair that my sister inherited from my mom.

Holla, I just added you at blogcatalog. Your blog is really interesting. Recently I signed up at multiply.com and noticed so many Filipino bloggers. This has quite changed my perception of Filipinos really.

I'm in New Zealand (originally from South West Asia) and mostly there are Filipino chics married to old NZ guys (I also noticed 10% of filipinos, mostly women live overseas). They're very friendly people though.

Honestly, all in all, I was under the impression that Filipinos are very tame people. But reading these blogs I noticed there is this spark of fierceness, gregariousness, intelligence, love of quality reading among your folks. I'm quite enraptured! :-)

And your blog is yet another such discovery. It's great to meet a Filipina tomboy ;-)

As for your hair, they're pretty (regardless of their style) like MOST Filipino chics that I've seen here!

Ember,
Among the reasons I started my blog is to exhibit the real beauty of Filipinas.
Over the past few years, I've been saddened that we are regarded as nothing more than mail order brides. I'd LOVE to prove them wrong lol.
Thank you for your salvo on Filipina beauties. Mabuhay!!!

Ghee,
It was a big deal for me, as with most Pinays IMO.
I think among most races, we have a serious attachment to our locks.
Thanks :)

Your new hairstyles is sporty and sofisticated. I'm glad you did it for you and not anyone else.

I sacraficed my curls one time by blowing them out for an ex. The sacrafice only lasted until the next wash but still, I didn't like that I messed with my hair for someone elses enjoyment.

No I only blow my hair strait for me.

Your last sentence of "doing it for myself and no one else" hit home. I've had to make several difficult decisions lately. Ultimately, the final consideration had to be that I was doing it for me. After all, I'm the one that has to live with the consequences, right?

By the way, Great blog!!

Women, and i'm just not saying it's a filipino thing but more like women in general deal with stress, anger, depression or whatever bad mood we're in- in very strange ways like cutting our hair, getting that outrageous hair color, getting pampered in a spa or getting that full manicure and pedicure! and of course, there's that whole thing about a shopping spree- just spend hours buying stuff/new wardrobe! i'm guilty of the latter! lol whatever it is, it's therapeutic for us!

as for you, oh my 12.5 inches of it!! happy to hear you did it! well, change is always good! while you always had yours long, i've always had mine short to very short like that of demi moore's ghost days! yay!

always nice to stop by on your blog- always good readin'! i wish i can write as much as you can- you internet addict, you! ;-)

before i turn this comment into an article, let me personally invite you to send me a postcard for my latest project at: http://www.thepostcardcollector.us/

i would love to link you and feature your blog there but the postcard is kinda prerequisite... check out the blog to know more!

Baligtad naman sa akin ngayon. Instead of having something cut (hair or whatever) nagpapatubo ako ng balbas, two months na nga e, kaya lang ayaw na ng labs ko, gusto na niyang ahitin ko na. Baka siguro before Christmas I will.
Indeed, it is important that we do something not because of any other person or what others will say. We do it because we believe it is right for us and we stand by our decision. Kung mali later e di pagsisihan and then move on...
